On Saturday, June 7th, more than 200 volunteers from the Amgen Foundation and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme, organizers from KaBOOM! and residents of the Oxnard community will join forces to build a new, safe playground at the Club. The new playground’s design is based on drawings provided by children who attended a Design Day event in April.
Our KaBOOM! playground build begins early in the morning with volunteers arriving at an empty site; within hours, KaBOOM! has led volunteers in transforming the space to a vibrant neighborhood-gathering place, in less than eight hours flat. It is an old-fashioned barn raising-with an urban twist!
The new playground will provide more than 3,000 children in the community with a safe place to play every year. Currently, the children have a grassy field to play, but have not had access to a playground onsite. The playspace is the first of two sets to be built by KaBOOM! and the Amgen Foundation this year, and one of more than 225 KaBOOM! will lead across the country in 2008 in an effort to provide a great place to play within walking distance of every child in America.
Amgen has generously covered the majority of expenses for this project, and volunteers will help to come and build, but the Club still has to raise $7,500 from members of the community to complete the project. It is our hope that you will consider a small gift to help us in our efforts to provide a safe community playground.
We also invite those who are interested to come witness the transformation for yourself on Saturday, June 7th between 8:30am and 3pm:
Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme
1900 West 5th Street
Oxnard, CA 93030
You may join in as a community volunteer for the entire day, or you may visit during any part of the day as an observer. The playground build begins at 8:30 a.m. and the ribbon-cutting ceremony will be at 2:30 p.m. Please RSVP by calling Tiffany Lopez at 805-815-4959 ext. 207 or by email at tlopez@bgcop.org.
